Conference Theme: Psychology and Anthropology in a Changing World

Psychology and anthropology are disciplines with an overlapping and sometimes fractious relationship.  Today there is perhaps a growing sense of the need for an interdisciplinary conversation from both sides.  The growth of interest in psychological anthropology provides one example of this as does the rise of interest in issues concerning cultural diversity and representation with psy-disciplines on the other.

As in the case of the first ENPA Biennial, this conference will be launched as an inclusive forum for scholars from a wide range of disciplinary and thematic orientations to discuss, theorize and reflect on historically and socio-culturally situated concepts of (i.e. the mind, the body, and their entanglements in cultural, social, and/or political worlds). Critical perspectives on the concepts of mainstream psychology are encouraged; productive engagements across the disciplinary boundaries of anthropology and cognitive science, psychiatry, philosophy, evolutionary biology, and others will also be welcome.  We also welcome discussion that touches upon contemporary practical and political issues, such as the role of diversity in mental health services, whilst also allowing for a re-examination of related classic or broader theoretical themes, such as how we conceptualise the nature of cultural difference in psychology in a globally interconnected world.

Through a fruitful dialogue within and between disciplines, the European Network for Psychological Anthropology (ENPA) aims to foster new insights not only in research contexts, but also in policy-making, therapy, and healing.

Writing (Co-)Lab:  ENPA Pre-Conference Workshop for Graduate Students and Early Career Scholars

For the last three years ENPA has facilitated virtual spaces for early career scholars and students to exchange ideas, build connections and co-create intellectual communities in the field of psychological anthropology. The Junior Scholars Community and the Works-in-Progress Seminar have fostered exciting conversations about various topics in psychological anthropology and allowed us to break down some of the barriers and hierarchies that many of us encounter in formal, academic spaces. The Works-in-Progress Seminar in particular has offered a platform for scholars at various stages in their careers to share and receive feedback on their work that is not yet finished, perhaps even just starting to take shape, in an informal, welcoming and caring space.

Now, we are very excited to invite graduate students and early-career scholars to a pre-conference workshop that builds on this virtual community and offers participants an opportunity to connect in-person, build networks, and receive in-depth feedback on their work, which the conference panel format doesn’t usually allow. Participants are welcome to share the papers they plan to present at the conference or other pieces of work they’d like to discuss. The workshop format is planned to accommodate between 15 and 20 scholars, each of whom will have a chance to present and discuss their work in smaller thematic groups.

The pre-conference will be a full day workshop taking place on Tuesday, June 6th, before the commencement of the 2023 ENPA Biennial Conference. If you are interested in participating, please complete this form no later than 30th of January 2023. We do not require a full abstract; rather, we simply ask that you tell us about the work you would like to share and discuss in the workshop as well as your motivation for wanting to participate.

Should you have any questions regarding the pre-conference workshop, please contact us via juniorfaculty@enpanthro.net.
