OPEN VISITING LECTURER POSITION AT SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY

Position No. 00050366. The Department of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, invites applications for a visiting lecturer position in cultural anthropology.  The position is available for the 2023-2024 academic year, beginning in Fall 2023. Candidates should havedemonstrated pedagogical skill and experience, complement existing curricular and theoretical strengths in our department, and have PhD in hand by August 1, 2023. The teaching load for the visiting lecturer positions will be 4 courses in Fall 2023, and 4 in Spring 2024. Strong candidates will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses, including but not limited to:  Introduction to Cultural Anthropology and Self, Culture and Mind: Introduction to Psychological Anthropology. Candidate for the position should also be able to teach an undergraduate course with a regional specialization, as well as courses at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels such as Research Methods in Ethnology, History of Anthropology (post 1960); Culture, Power and Biomedicine, and Social Organization. Candidates should also detail which courses they can teach, at which level, in culturalanthropology in their cover letter.

Lecture Position (Renewable) in Medical Anthropology at SMU in Dallas, Texas

The Department of Anthropology invites nominations and applications for an opportunity to be involved in the shaping of innovative/rapidly growing/expanding/dynamic/evolving pedagogies/programs/interdisciplinary program/curriculum in Cultural Anthropology (Position Number: 00005771). Creative energy, intellectual strength, a broad-ranging repertoire and teaching interests are essential. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. The candidate selected will be expected to be a significant partner in connecting the Department to an increasingly diverse and globally-connected community at the university and in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. 

Minimum qualifications: completed requirements for a doctoral or other terminal degree in Anthropology or related field by August 1, 2023; expertise to teach courses in medical and cultural anthropology and demonstrated potential as a teacher-scholar. 

Preferred qualifications: completed Ph.D.; experience teaching graduate or undergraduate courses in Anthropology as well as courses in any of the following areas: Medical Anthropology; interest in making significant contributions to graduate programs; research and/or creative scholarship which has led to publication, exhibition or dissemination in refereed journals, and/or national venues; experience mentoring culturally diverse students. Position begins August 1, 2023.

2023 SPA Condon Prize: Call for Submissions

The Society for Psychological Anthropology solicits entries for the Richard G. Condon Prize for the best student essay in psychological anthropology. The winner will be awarded $500 and a one year membership in the Society for Psychological Anthropology. The winning essay will be published in Ethos after working with the Editor for final preparation of the manuscript. 

The prize is named for the late Richard G. Condon, whose work included the study of adolescence, family, and change among the Canadian Inuit. Psychological anthropology is defined broadly to include interrelationships among psychological, social and cultural phenomena. Essays will be judged on their relevance to psychological anthropology, organization and clarity, and their theoretical and methodological strengths. The author must have been an undergraduate or graduate student during academic year 2022-2023. The author need not be a current member of the Society for Psychological Anthropology. The winner will be recognized at the SPA Business Meeting at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association in November.

Papers submitted for consideration must follow these guidelines:

  • Submissions must not be published in any form, or currently under review for publication in any outlet in the U.S. or abroad.
  • Submissions must not exceed 9,000 words inclusive of all references, endnotes and acknowledgements.
  • Submissions must be formatted according to the American Anthropological Association style guide.
  • Submissions must reflect the primary work of the student submitting the entry. If a paper has been authored by multiple authors, student status of all authors must be clearly stated, and contribution effort documented in detail.
  • Submitted papers must be emailed as a single Microsoft Word document to the Chair of the committee, Whitney Duncan, at whitney.duncan@unco.edu by June 1, 2023.

  • Subject line of the email should read “Condon Prize Submission.”
  • In the body of the email, provide the author’s name, permanent (not institutional) mailing

address, email address, student affiliation (university and department), and the title of

the paper that is attached.

graduation. 

  • Ensure that no evidence of the author’s identity is evident in any way in the text of the

Word document or by reference in the paper.

Stirling Award 2023

The Stirling Award is awarded to a previously published work (article or book, in alternate years) that makes an outstanding contribution to any area of psychological anthropology.

The Stirling Award was originally established in 1968 by Rebecca and Gene Stirling. Winners of this prestigious award recognizing the best published work in psychological anthropology become members of the selection committee for a three-year rotation.

Unpublished manuscripts, dissertations, and web publications are not eligible. Edited volumes are not eligible for the book prize, but individual chapters may be submitted for the article prize. There are separate rules for nomination of books and articles; please consult the relevant rules below.

2023 Stirling Award Competition for the Best Published Article in Psychological Anthropology
Articles and chapters from edited volumes published within the last two years (July 16, 2021 – July 15, 2023), are eligible for consideration. Nominations may be made by any active member of the American Anthropological Association, including the author. Nomination materials, including a PDF of the nominated work and a cover letter outlining its contribution to the field of psychological anthropology, must be submitted online no later than July 15, 2023, using this link (https://uconn.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2bp9vNy2cWog1PE). 

Submissions that do not include a cover letter will not be reviewed. The winner will be announced at the SPA’s Business Meeting at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association and will receive a $500 cash prize.

The Beatrice and John Whiting SPA Biennial Travel Grants 

2023 submissions have closed. There will be an announcement for 2025 Whiting Awards in early 2025.

The SPA announces the Beatrice and John Whiting SPA Biennial Travel Grants to facilitate participation in the SPA Biennial Meetings. The SPA Biennial Meetings represent one of the most important ways in which the SPA promotes and supports the continued growth of the field of psychological anthropology, and these travel grants provide financial assistance to individuals who might not otherwise be able to attend. 

Eligibility

1. Grants are open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows. 

2. All applicants must be making a presentation at the conference in the form of a paper, poster, photo essay or ethnographic film. 

3. Individuals who are participating solely as a session chair, discussant or workshop participant are not eligible. 

4. Awardees must attend at least two full days of the conference. 

5. Awardees need not be current members of the SPA. 

6. Individuals are not eligible to receive the award if they also are receiving any other funding from the SPA to attend the biennial meeting, such as an International Early Career Scholar Travel Grant, or travel support provided to the SPA Board’s graduate student representative. 

Awards of approximately $400 will be awarded to individuals to facilitate their participation in the SPA Biennial Meetings. The number of awards will vary according to the funding available in any given year.
